You can decorate your stateroom door or even use clings on the windows and balcony door from Dollar tree. Travel insurance documents – Additional travel insurance is always a good idea. Excursion confirmations – Just like with cruise documents, you’ll want to ensure you have a copy of your excursion confirmation.

Backpacks or tote bags for carrying essentials

There will be two formal nights but you are not required to participate. You may think it will be too cold to swim but I actually used my bathing suit quite a lot. I had anticipated the towns in Alaska would be the coldest part of my trip but I was SO wrong. I’m a list person and I found it to be very helpful to make a few lists of what you’re doing or where you’re going and plan your outfits from there.

What to Wear for Excursions on an Alaskan Cruise

Warm slippers meant relaxing in your cabin after a day of excursions without putting on socks or shoes. Use this opportunity to express yourself through fashion while enjoying the breathtaking beauty of Alaska. Feeling good in what you wear can enhance your overall experience as you traverse Alaska’s stunning landscapes. Slippers or lightweight sneakers can be ideal choices for casual strolls around the deck or relaxing in your cabin. Opting for shoes that are easy to slip on and off will save you time and effort.

Cruise lines without self-serve laundry charge high fees for wash and press. Check out the newest colors, styles and trends for both adults and children. Men can wear dress pants and a button shirt without a tie and a jacket for a smarter look. If you prefer to go all out in a suit and tie, by all means, do so.

Alaskan weather consists of gloomy clouds, foggy skies and chilly rain, even in the summer. When it comes to layering for men, versatile pieces that can be layered together will be the best option for Alaskan cruise outfits. Packing for a cruise to Alaska is vastly different than packing for a Caribbean cruise.

When it comes to picking a cruise line for your Alaska adventure, there are a few things to consider. Princess Cruises is perfect for families with different generations traveling together, and they’ve received the Best Cruise Line for Alaska award multiple times. However, it also can still get chilly at times, especially in May and June. It gets particularly cooler on a cloudy day and at night, of course. For example, temperatures in May can drop into the 40s Fahrenheit (4-9 degrees Celsius) on a cloudy day and even lower during the night. While Alaska is known for its ice and glaciers, it’s not too cold during the cruise season from May to September for most passengers.

While you can wear sneakers, waterproof hiking shoes are better for wet and muddy weather that you might experience on some Alaska excursions. Good hiking shoes will also give you traction and support for uneven terrain. Bring a few pairs of your most comfortable and best jeans or ponte pants for daytime, and a couple of pairs of dress pants for casual nights and formal wear.

What is the dress code for an Alaskan cruise?

The ship isn’t necessarily the destination as much because Alaska’s beauty and wilderness is really the draw for these cruises. I had to buy a pair of gloves on my last Alaskan cruise because my hands were much colder than I expected. If you are sailing at the very beginning or end of the Alaskan season, you might want to consider packing a waterproof coat with a warmer lining, like sherpa or fleece. A light puffer jacket would travel well for an Alaskan cruise as well. Depending on the cruise line you choose, there will likely be formal nights where you’re expected to dress in formal wear for dinner. While it may not be shorts and t-shirt weather, you’ll want to pack a few lighter layers if you’re traveling during this time.

Do You Need a Bathing Suit for an Alaskan Cruise?

We had some rain on our embarkation day in Vancouver and in the afternoon while we walked around Ketchikan’s Creek Street and the cruise port. My name is Jo Castro and I've been a freelance writer for over 35 years. Ten years ago I committed to blogging, documenting my finds about fashion and travel for women, like me, over 50.

It’s important to have a jacket handy, especially when the temperature drops to single digits. One essential item to pack is a warm jacket, as temperatures can drop to below freezing. I never ended up needing mine, but you might if your excursion calls for it. This is why I recommend bringing a small backpack on all your excursions.

As well as pages to keep track of all your excursions and port information. One for ship attire, and then one for each port (Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway). You’ll find all the information here about what you REALLY need to bring on your Alaskan Cruise and what you don’t. You can’t gamble while in Alaska, but casinos will open up while the ship sails in international waters around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Peak Season tends to cost more because the weather is better, and that is when more people can travel. All cruise lines require advance notice for appropriate accommodation.

Alaska is known for its rainfall, so having a reliable waterproof coat is essential. Fleece sweaters are not only cozy but also quick-drying, making them perfect for those unexpected rain showers or misty excursions along the Inside Passage. Opt for a lightweight fleece that can easily fit under your jacket or coat. Insulated jackets are a must-have when venturing into Alaska’s colder regions.

And if it’s bitter cold, you can put jeans over leggings and have double the warm layers. So most outfits started with a basic tee shirt, paired with a flannel button-down or lightweight thermal. Jeans or leggings are great for walking around or sightseeing. If you choose not to do formal night, you can still eat at the buffet (just not the dining rooms). In May, thermal wear, especially fleece-lined leggings, are invaluable, ensuring comfort in temperatures ranging from 50-55°F.

I was fortunate to be hosted by Princess Cruises on the Discovery Princess in May this year (2023) on an amazing 7 day cruise to Alaska from Seattle. The first time I sailed to Alaska was from Seward to Vancouver in July. The second cruise was roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska in August. The most recent time I sailed to Alaska was a round-trip cruise from Vancouver in May. With a little planning and a lot of love, lifelong family vacation memories can be made at all ages, stages – and places both near and far. You don’t have to wait until your kids are more grown up or you have a ton of money saved to start traveling.
